The Craft Behind Wide Brimmed Hats At Augustine Hat Co.

As some of you may know, I started my own hat brand almost 3 years ago! What a journey it’s been deep diving into the very old craft of hat makin’. My collection for hats began years ago, long before the inception of Augustine Hat Co. Discovering the intricate process involved in creating Australian wool felt hats deepened my appreciation for them. Unlike many fast-fashion accessories, these hats exemplify slow fashion, designed to last for decades or even a lifetime when crafted with quality. If history has anything to say about it, these hats will always have a place in fashion. Not only for their stylist properties but the pure function they provide.

Curious about how our Australian felt wide-brimmed hats are crafted? Here's an inside look at the meticulous process that transforms raw wool into sophisticated headwear.

How Wool becomes Felt

The first step is sourcing. We find small farms with high-quality sheep wool is selected. Once sourced the fleece is vrty carefully sheared from the sheep and then cleaned.

The wool is thoroughly washed to remove any impurities. This cleaning ensures that the wool is ready for felting and helps achieve a smooth finish in the final product.

After cleaning, the wool is carded. Carding is the process of combing the wool fibers to separate and align them. This step creates a fluffy, loose material that is easier to felt.

The wool is then laid out in layers. For hats these layers are built into a domed shape so they can eventaully be molded.

The wool fibers are pressed together, forming a dense, matted fabric.

Shaping and Finishing Touches

Once the wool has begun to felt, it is shaped into the desired form for the hat. This is done using a hat mold or form, which could be a wooden or metal block that matches the shape of the intended hat. The felt is pressed and molded over the form to achieve the correct shape and size.

We use different molds for our styles! For examples the pencil-brimmed Laguna is made with a mold with rolled edges. The smaller Summer Set has a shorter flat brim. The western-style Dolly is pressed into a cattleman shape. Based on our Augustine Hat Co designs we sometimes add stylish bands enhance the hat's overall look.

Ski To APRES SKI In Three Easy steps | Apres Ski Outfits 2024

Effortlessly Stylish Apres-Ski Attire: From Slopes to Lounge with Flair

Living in Europe has completely transformed my view of après-ski fashion. The Alps have perfected the après-ski experience, setting a high bar for style and comfort after hitting the slopes.

The biggest difference in common Apres Ski in Europe vs the United States is in Europe, après-ski is a cherished part of the skiing culture, offering a sophisticated blend of relaxation and socializing. The experience often includes enjoying drinks and meals at upscale mountain lodges or cozy chalets, where the focus is on savoring fine food and elegant surroundings. European après-ski tends to be more about unwinding in style, with a strong emphasis on fashion and leisure. I’ve noticed a huge rise in the popularty of the ‘art’ of apes ski in America. That’s why I’m here writing this blog right now!

When it’s time to transition from skiing to socializing, it’s essential to swap your ski gear for a chic après-ski outfit. Since you might not always have time to head home for a change, here are some fresh ideas to help you look fantastic right after your day on the mountain.

  1. Vintage Charm: Revamp the Basics

Retro ski outfits are making waves, but for après-ski, elevate your base layer instead. Simply peel off your outer ski gear, and you’re ready for the evening. Consider it your winter version of a favorite sun dress—just add a few stylish accessories and you’re all set. I’ve been a fan of Lain Snow’s base layers, particularly their Black Diamond series from our Italian Alps adventure. Keep a cozy wool sweater close for added warmth and style.

Insider Tip: Enhance your retro look add a Vintage Ski Beanie for that extra touch of flair.

Faux fur is definitely trending this season. After a day of getting helmet hair, let your hair breathe with Augustine Hat Co’s reversible faux fur like headband. Their Apres Ski Headbands are designed to be reversible, offering a chic furry fleece look on one side or a trendy 'APRES' on the other side. Two styles in one.

  1. Snow-Ready Footwear: Style Meets Comfort

Boots are a staple for après-ski, but they should be suited for snowy conditions. After a day in ski boots, slipping into a pair of warm, comfortable snow boots is pure bliss. Invest in quality boots to ensure your feet stay cozy and comfortable as you unwind.

Pro Tips:

  1. Accessorize Smartly: Accessories play a crucial role in perfecting your après-ski ensemble. They’re not just stylish; they also help manage helmet hair, making them a winter essential. Check out more of my favorite winter beanies and headbands for the ideal accessory.
